VW Beetle Turned Into Police Car

VW Beetle Turned Into Police Car

A police force in the US has converted a VW Beetle into a police car. The 1973 "bug-erceptor" only has a top speed of 70mph so won't be used in any chases. Instead the car will be used mostly as a public relations tool for the department, making appearances in parades and at school events.

The car was seized in a DUI case and boasts a new paint job, sheriff's decals and tags, a siren, radio, barred rear side windows, a side-mounted spotlight and police lights.

Transporter full of VWs drives into San Diego Bay

Volkswagen doesn't make amphibious cars, but it may want to consider them in the future. On Saturday, a trucker hauling a load of new VWs from San Diego to Los Angeles drove off a pier and into the ocean.

Local authorities say the driver apparently "suffered from some kind of medical emergency", causing him to black out and lose control of the truck. The cab careened into the San Diego Bay at a National City marine terminal, plunging into the water. The trailer stayed on the pier, but three cars fell into the bay.

A-M-S writes strange things about the engine range: two versions of the 1.4 TSI twin-charger (115 and 140 hp) , the 2.0 Turbo FSI with 200 hp, while a V6 engine is a possibility for an R32 or R36. It's surprising not to see the 170 hp version of the 1.4 TSI engine, while a 2.0 TDI 140 hp diesel engine is thought to be a certainty.

Spycam: 2009 Volkswagen Golf

Volkswagen's Golf is arguably the most important vehicle in the automaker's lineup and a sales generating machine. So when spies caught the first glimpse of what looks to be the upcoming all-new, sixth-generation Volkswagen Golf, even a grainy, rear-shot only view of it caught our attention.

Early intel suggests the new Golf will be readied by late next year and will likely be a 2009 model. Given the push by VW in the U.S. to sell cars under $15,000, we'll probably have to wait until as late as the 2012 model year before we see a version of it, but expect a facelift of the present U.S. car shortly after the new Golf hits European streets.

Here is a very first photo of an almost undisguised prototype, which reveals some of the new styling, including a substantially re-worked rear hatch area. Final styling was reportedly overseen by Volkswagen's lead designer and rising star Walter de Silva.

VW Scirocco won't be coming to the U.S.

VW Scirocco won't be coming to the U.S.

According to Automotive News, Volkswagen of America doesn't want the new Scirocco when it's released in the next few years. The reason? Another two-door, Golf-based hatch would cannibalize sales of the GTI, and with American's apparent distaste for hatches, sales would be underwhelming.

Adrian Hallmark, executive veep at VW of America maintains that, "having six different coupes and hatchbacks would be crazy," which seems like sound logic. At the same time however, an argument for VW to have a more low-slung coupe in their lineup, regardless of how you pop the trunk, may be to the automaker's benefit. Even more so if the Scirocco was outfitted with higher-end appointments –- distancing itself from the GTI, but still coming in a few notches below some of Audi's entry-level offerings.
