Japan's space agency began recruiting astronauts for the first time in nearly a decade on Tuesday amid growing interest in the space program spurred by a Japanese astronaut's journey on the U.S. space shuttle Endeavour.

Japan's space program was in tatters in the late 1990s after a series of mishaps, but it sent its first lunar probe into orbit last year in hopes of putting the program back on track.

The first piece of a new Japanese laboratory was also installed on the International Space Station last month, paving the way for more Japanese astronauts to work in space.

As any good geek should know by now Japan has some of the wackiest and most unusual products anywhere. So when we were visiting Tokyo recently and saw lines of Japanese schoolgirls waiting to play an amazing new game for the Wii called Super Pii Pii Brothers we were only a little surprised…but it was quite unusual to see the “strap-on” style accessory and peeing action that Pii Pii Brothers provides.

Leave it to those crazy Japanese to come up with Super Pii Pii Brothers, a game for the Nintendo Wii that lets the ladies pee standing up like us dudes!

Tokujin Yoshioka recently unveiled his design for the new Swarovski flagship store in Ginza, Tokyo. The shop features a facade covered in layers of mirrored stainless steel. Its sparkling appearance is intended to resemble a 'crystal forest'.

Big breasts win verdict for Japanese pin-up

A Japanese pin-up model says that her big breasts have not only boosted her career -- they also helped her overturn a court verdict.

The bikini model, who goes by her professional name Serena Kozakura, was cleared after a court decided she was too well-endowed to squeeze into a room through a hole, as she had been found guilty of earlier.

"I used to hate my body so much," Kozakura, who has appeared in product commercials on television, told the private Asahi network in an interview aired Tuesday.

"But it was my breasts" that won in court, she said.

2,240 police, 460 patrol cars, copter mobilized for car chase in Osaka

Police on Thursday arrested a wanted man after a two-hour car chase that involved 2,240 officers, 460 police cars and one helicopter. Hirofumi Fukuda, 27, who had been wanted for assaulting police officers on Jan 21, was arrested after a chase through central Osaka. Around 11 a.m., police received an emergency call saying that a car was driving recklessly, ignoring traffic lights. When a patrol car approached the vehicle in question, it took off.

Police were mobilized throughout the area and a helicopter called in. The chase ended when Fukuda's car crashed into a bridge column. He sustained light injuries but no one else was injured in the chase.

Japan To Reboot Space Program With Paper Airplanes

I really don't know what to make of this story. University of Tokyo "researchers" and members of the Japanese Origami Airplane Association are trying to develop a paper "spaceplane" able to survive the flight back from the ISS to the Earth.

If that doesn't seem ridiculous enough, the prototype being tested in an "ultra-high-speed wind tunnel" at the University of Tokyo’s Okashiwa campus is a mere 3.1 inches long. What, they couldn't afford to spring for a full sheet of paper? I guess it was a little snarky of me to run down their wind tunnel, since it is able to subject test items to 5,300 mile per hour winds.

However, I find myself wondering if a paper airplane could even be subjected to 5,300 mph winds anywhere but in a wind tunnel. I'm thinking that the terminal velocity of a paper airplane is about twenty miles per hour.

It seems like every time I come across a new Japanese video clip it just get’s weirder and weirder and I love it! 'Bogeyman' molests women at resort

A man dressed as a namahage -- a monster traditionally used in Akita Prefecture to frighten children into showing proper manners -- burst into a public bath here and molested several women on New Year's Eve, tourism officials said.

Furious Oga tourism officials have banned the neighborhood association the man belonged to from supplying namahage performers for three years.

But, thanks to an apology and expression of deep remorse, there will be no charges laid against the man who dressed up as the namahage -- roughly equivalent to the West's Bogeyman, but recognized by the national government as a significant intangible folk cultural asset. He has, however, received a severe reprimand for his behavior.

Meet Yuki-taro, a Japanese robot built to quickly clear roads after heavy snows.

The cute little guy, about 5 feet long and 2 and a half feet high, simply plows into snowbanks, taking in the white stuff, compressing it and neatly stacking it in two-foot-long bricks on his rear bed.

Japanese paper Yomiuri is reporting that Panasonic will unveil a 150-inch plasma to show the world who has the biggest flatscreen manufacturing capability. That above is the photo of the now second-place 103-inch plasma as big as a queen-sized bed. (Sharp has the current title of biggest at 108-inches).

Japanese researchers have created a flexible, paper-thin speaker that reportedly produces faux surround sound. It is only prototype, but never mind , there is a looooong way to go till next Christmas.
