Left Lane Drivers Unite!

Traffic has become increasingly congested and tempers flare as slower drivers occupy what has been historically referred to as the “fast lane”. It’s time to get that Left Lane back!

Miata? Impractical? BAH!

Miata? Impractical? BAH!

Why is this man smiling? Because he's probably as amused by what he's doing as we are. Doc B sent us these photos he took when he came upon the unlikely sight of a Mazda Miata being used to haul a sofa loveseat. Here we thought a Miata was barely spacious enough to transport two adults and a couple of overnight bags, and this guy just turns the conventional wisdom on its head. Seriously, try moving that thing with, say, a MINI Clubman or a Honda Fit. Not gonna happen.

The BMW M1 Hommage

| |
The BMW M1 Hommage

The BMW M1 Hommage blends a wide, aggressive stance with intentionally retro/modern twists on the key visual elements that defined Paul Bracq's original BMW Turbo concept and the Giugiaro-designed M1 homologation special that followed. It is instantly recognizable as an M1, particularly in profile, where the M1 Hommage's basic shape clearly mimics that of its forebear. BMW's stylists also incorporated similar nods the particulars of the original, such as the louvered rear window; the badge placement in back; the line extending aft from the side glass; and even the wheel design, which is an exaggerated take on the ones you'll find on the original road car. Poring over the details of the Homage is akin to going on an Easter Egg hunt.

Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series Will Boast 670 Horsepower

Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series Will Boast 670 Horsepower

It won't make its official debut until this summer, but the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series is already staking its claim as one of the most extreme Mercedes-Benzes ever built.

It starts with a 6.0-liter twin turbo V12 engine. In the standard SL65 AMG it pumps out a healthy 604 horsepower, but in the Black Series the same engine gets cranked up to 670 hp. The torque peak won't increase, but given that it already sits at 738 pound-feet, there's really isn't a need for more. The five-speed automatic transmission, torque converter and all, will remain, but it will get two Sport shift programs, with the second delivering quicker gearchanges timed at just 250 milliseconds.

GPS doesn't stand for AutoPilot

As of today, we're taking bets to see how long it will take before people realize that "GPS" does not stand for "Auto Pilot." The latest "But the GPS told me to..." story is brought to you by a charter bus driver in Seattle. Piloting a coach through the Washington Arboretum -- as the GPS instructed him -- the driver ignored, or didn't see, or didn't believe (take your pick) the flashing lights and sign warning him that his 11-foot-high bus was too tall for the looming 9-foot concrete overpass.

The 2009 Dodge Ram that could've been

Chrysler is in the battle of its life to regain its competitiveness here in North America, and there is perhaps no vehicle more important to becoming profitable again than the 2009 Dodge Ram. The Pentastar put in a lot of elbow grease to get this truck just right, and the end result is improved power and efficiency, more storage, and a more refined look than the current truck. We like the design of the new Ram, but the production truck unveiled in Detroit was just one of many designs sketched by Chrysler artists.

2008 Saab Turbo X Hits The Track

|
2008 Saab Turbo X Hits The Track

We'd read somewhere that at the height of the Cold War, the U.S. locked in the struggle against the evil Commies, Sweden was considered as a potential candidate for location of a Northern European base for F-117A Night Hawk Stealth fighters. Obviously that didn't happen as the decision was made to base all 59 of the arrow-headed black-as-night fighters stateside at Holloman Air Force Base after testing completed at the Toponah test range. And now, well, now they've all been retired. But we're going to imagine for a moment that maybe a couple of them were sent over to Sweden for some leave time. It's the only way we're able to explain the 2008 Saab Turbo X — because if Saab claims they're born from jets, we're of the impression this jet-black baby meatball's daddy has to be an F-117A.

It's not your father's Mercedes. A peek inside the pope's American ride.

Pope Benedict XVI's wheels for his U.S. tour are sitting at the training headquarters for the U.S. Secret Service in Beltsville, Md. The car was shipped over from Rome two weeks ago, and when Newsweek was invited for a sneak peek this week, it was parked in one of the facility's empty lots beside other vehicles the agents are using to prepare for the pontiff's arrival tomorrow. But Benedict's car doesn't look like the others. In part that's because it's a Mercedes, which contrasts with the agency's mostly Chevy limousines and SUVs. But it's also hard to miss with a six-foot-tall glass enclosure built to showcase the pontiff.

The first thought that comes to mind when we see this futuristi motorcycle - again, \"another concept.\" But there is, surprisingly, it does not concept, but it is a real vehicle called MonoTracer. This is a closed-type motorcycle. closed \"passenger compartment\", which improves the aerodynamics and increases safety, and of itself, protects the driver from the strong wind.

The Prius from hell is green, of course

We have a neighbor who drives a pale green Prius. You know the color - it's a soothing, sandy tint, sort of the look you might find in an untainted desert in National Geographic specials. But what is most noteworthy about this vehicle is the fear it instills in people, not because it's some kind of politically correct muscle car, but because of its license plate: ECO BRAT.

Vette ZR-1 at the Nurburgring

Vette ZR-1 at the Nurburgring

Leading up to the official reveal of the Corvette ZR-1, a rare week went by when we didn't see spy shots of the General's new super coupe eating up the Nurburgring. But still images don't tell the whole tale, so InsideLine sent its spies to the North Loop with a video camera to capture an uncloaked ZR-1 making the rounds on the 'Ring. According to the men behind the lens, they were able to clock the 620 hp, supercharged 'Vette running laps "in the low 7:40s," easily within reach of supercars costing substantially more than the ZR-1's estimated $100k price tag. But what about the elephant on the 'Ring in the room? The Nissan GT-R V-Spec.

Preventing Head Bumps

Preventing Head Bumps

In 1933, car designers thought of everything: Automatic Trap Door in Car Roof Prevents Head Bumps.

Have you ever bumped your head while getting into or out of an automobile? If so, you undoubtedly will be greatly interested in a recent invention coming from England.

The Riley Lincook cars so popular in Britain, are now equipped with automatic trap doors in their roofs, as shown in the photo on the right. The part of the roof frequently bumped by heads has an arrangement similar to a hinge.
